Long hitting George Munyao posted a round total of 227 gross to emerge the overall winner of the 2014 Nyali open golf championships that ended at the par 71 Nyali Golf and country club course.
George Munyao echoed the views of all coastal golfers when he expressed his immense joy at being a ‘home boy” to lift the Nyali Open Championship Trophy and ending the seven year long period of draught during which no coast based player has done it, the last win coming when Samwel Kahindi won it in 2005.
The home crowd can be justly proud of its “boys”, another local player finding a place among the gross winners for one round and other local players making a clean sweep of the entire nett prize table.
Agil, the Junior found himself among the gross winners, for his 72 in the first round which incidentally was the lowest score returned by any player in the entire field of the amateurs for a round.
A Chelugai won the gross prize for the second round with 75 and John Karichu the third round with 73.
In the nett side, it was one, two, three for the Coast, both in the full three round results and each individual rounds. Dickson Baraza took the 1st for three rounds with a total of nett 215, followed by Solomon Majanga with 221 and Lumatete Muchai with 222 for the third prize.
The best nett for 1st round was won by Alan Dainty with 70 , for the 2nd Martin Mahome with a terrific score of 68 and for 3rd round Kelly Rob with 73.
Dickson and Baraza completed the honours for Nyali by lifting the Inter-Club Trophy with combined nett of 436 and George and Mathew Wahome put Mombasa Golf Club in the second place with their combined total of 449.
David Odhiambo was the top Pro with 285, one over par for the four rounds, separated by two shots from Greg Snow in the second place and a shot behind Greg was Brian Njoroge in the third place.
The generous prize kitty for the Pros and a long line of lovely prizes were provided by the sponsors the First Chartered Securities Group of companies, comprising ICEA Lion Insurance Company, Mitchell Cotts, Mombasa Intercontinental Beach Resort and NIC Bank, represented by strong teams from the companies and headed by the veteran Nyali golfer Duncan Ndegwa.
